About Laura
Kia ora, I'm Laura Trethewey (she/her).
I’m a dancer, teacher, community builder and more.
Dance and music has always been a big part of my life, although, it was mostly limited to my bedroom for the earlier years.
In 2015 I walked into my first Ceroc class and quickly became addicted. In 2018 I branched out to try West Coast Swing, and my addiction worsened.
Both West Coast Swing and Ceroc (Modern Jive) are improvised, modern, partner dances. Today I teach and support our NZ dance community in both styles, and compete in an effort to share my love of dance. I lead and follow in both styles, and love to switch roles.
With no prior formal dance background, and a busy worklife, it hasn't been an easy journey to get to where I am today. Many people believe that to dance, you have to be coordinated and/or have 'natural talent'. I don't think I have either of those (definitely not the coordination part), but I make up for it with passion, resilience, and consistent effort.
I love helping dancers of all levels grow their confidence, connection, and creativity on the floor.
For me, dance is about joy, community, individual expression, confidence, co-creation, and connection to music and people.
